New mystery author

I stumbled onto this author COMPLETELY by accident - I was on a weekend 'vacation' at a resort and was rained in for two days straight. I had read
everything I had brought with me and the only thing left was a friend's copy of Rod Crossfield's Selected Adventures of Detective Donnelly. As a rule I
only read cozies, and the characters in this book seemed so excessively masculine, but once I had settled in I was hooked. The characters are so real that I
can name someone I...

I was rereading this book, published in 1928, and was struck by an interesting fact. One of the characters (the murder victim, in fact) is a wealthy 28-year-old woman who has been married for ten years. That means she got married at the age of 18. That's a bit young by contemporary standards, but was probably considered a pretty normal age for women to marry prior to 1930, so I don't have a problem with that.
Here's the part that raised my eyebrows a bit. She is described as having had an...

I've recently begun reading this series of British mysteries and I'm enjoying them for the most part. The plots themselves are quite good and the relationship between Morse and his assistant, Sergeant Lewis, is amusing.
One thing that does make me roll my eyes a bit is that in EVERY novel Morse -- who is middle-aged, overweight and a borderline alcoholic -- has some woman fall madly in love with him because he's so cultured, kind and witty.
I recently finished this book, and it is wonderful! Very different from any other book I've read.

In the first chapter, a boy's father gets him to select a book - promising to forever protect it and make sure it isn't forgotten.
About six months ago, I read "S is for Silence" by Sue Grafton. It had a female private investigator who was working for a woman client. The client's mother had mysteriously vanished when the woman was a child and she wanted the detective, Kinsey Milhone, to see if she could find out what had ever happened to her. The novel was set in California.
Last night I was in the bookstore and picked up "Vanishing Point" a brand-new mystery novel by Marcia Muller. Guess what...

California detectives and the women who love them??
I'm a longtime fan of the Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman, but the least-interesting and most-annoying aspect of this series is how Alex's off-again, on-again girlfriend, Robin, can't ever decide whether or not she wants to be part of his life.
Now I've started reading the Elvis Cole series, by Robert Crais.
